In this episode of News from the Heart, Swamiji discusses the recent legalization of marijuana (cannabis) in Oregon. He talks about the medical uses of marijuana both from a research perspective and from his own personal experience with treatment of four people with brain tumors. He also warns that he has seen adverse psychological effects on vulnerable people. He talks about the failure of prohibition in the 1930’s, and how the end of prohibition was at least partly due to the need for increased government revenue from liquor sales. He sees a similar dynamic here. He also discusses the origins of marijuana prohibition in the efforts of cotton and nylon and paper producers to eliminate competition from hemp, which historically was a very important crop in the US. He warns that people pursuing a spiritual practice should be careful about using marijuana as it can cause you to lose focus. From a talk given on July 12, 2015.
